- 1897 Vickers & Sons bought the Barrow Shipbuilding Company The shipyard at Barrow became the Naval Construction & Armaments Company.
- 1911 Renamed Vickers Ltd
- 1927 became Vickers Armstrongs Ltd
- 1955 Changed to Vickers Armstrongs Shipbuilders, Ltd
- 1968 Changed again to Vickers Limited Shipbuilding Group
- 1977 Nationalised under the Aircraft and Shipbuilding Industries Act and subsumed into British Shipbuilders.
- 1986 Sold to an employee-led company, VSEL Consortium, which also included its Birkenhead-based subsidiary, Cammell Laird.
- 1995 Following GEC's purchase VSEL became Marconi Marine (VSEL), part of the company's GEC-Marconi division.
- 2003 it became an independent division known as BAE Systems Submarines
