English: At a seventy foot waterline, the world's first large one-design class was exclusive. In 1899, the New York Yacht Club had ordered Herreshoff to come up with the New York 70 Class' extreme design to promote friendly competition amongst its wealthiest members. Only four boats were built, their build was not very stiff, they leaked extensively, only two of them carried on racing after the first season. August 1900 pictures from the Library of Congress.
