Category:Mycelial cord
Note: A rhizomorph is another name for a mycelial cord.
It is not really possible to identify fungi from their mycelial cords except by taking the DNA and sequencing it. On the other hand, the fruiting bodies (basiocarps) are quite distinctive with their flattish wrinkled areas of brown hymenium surrounded by a white crust in the case of Serpula lacrymans. The latter is one of very few species known for attacking houses, and could be the source of the mycelial cords in these images. However there is actually also another lesser-known species, Serpula himantioides, which can occur inside houses - it has a rather different basiocarp.
Serpula is just one of many genera which have mycelial cords. Another famous one is Armillaria. S. Lacrymans and S. himantoides are almost identical except for the basidiocarps. They are often confused with roots.
