Murase Taiitsu (1803-1881) was a Japanese painter, poet and calligrapher. He became one of the most notable and eccentric exponents of literati painting (Bunjinga or Nanga) of the early Meiji period (1868–1912). He was educated in Confucianism and Buddhism from the monk Kaigen at Zen’oji temple.
