Built in 1890, this house located at 15 East Gorham Street in Madison, Wisconsin, was designed in Queen Anne style (see the Property Record online). It was renovated in 1928 in the Tudor Revival style by Balch and Lippert, being converted from a single-family residence into an apartment building known as the Mertle Apartments.
The building features a buff brick exterior, hipped roof, three-over-one double-hung windows, a central entrance tower with chamfered corners, buttresses flanking the arched entrance door, and a crenellated low-profile stone parapet, painted red brick side and rear facades, a front shed dormer and side hipped dormers, and a concrete base.
The building is a contributing structure in the Mansion Hill Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.
