English: Max Sandreczky (1839-1899) was a Lutheran pediatric surgeon who settled in Jerusalem in 1868, where in 1872 he established and ran the first pediatric hospital in the Holy Land, Kinderhospital Marienstift , Street of the Prophets, Jerusalem. Grand Duke Frederick Francis II of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (1823-1883) enabled the foundation of the children's hospital by an endowment, which is why the hospital was named after his third wife, Princess Mary of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt (1850-1922). Having lost the support of the late grand duke Sandreczky had to come up for much of the expenses on his own. In failing health, Sandreczky killed himself on June 22, 1899, at the age of 60, haunted by fears that he would become a burden to his family and not be able to continue helping sick children. In 1901 the hospital was taken over by the Deaconesses Hospital in Jerusalem, however, finally closed down in 1914.
