English: Multi-apartment birdhouses especially meant for the housing of purple martins (Progne subis) saw an explosion of popularity in the mid-1900s due to the (largely erronious, but highly promoted) belief that purple martins fed heavily on mosquitoes, combined with the colonial bent of martin nesting. Today many have been replaced by collections of single gourds, but the "martin house" is still a common sight across the eastern United States of America.
