Category:Linden (ship, 1992)
Information about the vessel may be found at IMO 8930184. A ship can change name and flag state through time, but the IMO number remains the same through the hull's entire lifetime. As a result, it can be useful to identify a ship by using the IMO number. |
After World War I there was a shortage of tonnage and many new ships were built. Many of the wooden sailing ships were built without engine in the hope to quickly earn the money necessary for installing it later. The crises soon afterwords resulted in many never installing it.
Linden of 1920 was planned to have an engine right away, but there were unexpected problems with the launching and the installation was postponed. Linden was to be one of the last three sailing ships without engine in the Finnish ship register, when deregistered 1953 (Gustaf Erikson, famous for his fleet of windjammers, died in 1947 and his last ships were retired after Pamir did her last voyage in Finnish hands in 1949).
Linden was built for Verner Pettersson, who would be the skipper and main shareholder, at Ytternäs near Mariehamn. Linden sailed 1920–1940, primarily with wood from Finland and Norrland, Sweden, to ports in Denmark and Germany, sometimes England. She made her last voyage in 1947.
The replica Linden was built in Sjökvarteret in Mariehamn to keep the know-how of building wooden ships that had been acquired by building Albanus (the repair of Sigyn 1998–2001 was made possible by these efforts, Jehu was a later followup on the same theme).
Linden was designed to be operated commercially, financed by charter trips, as there was enough work for the volunteers with Albanus. The ship is now (2009) based in Kimitoön and operated by Kasnäs Sailing Ab. She is registered for domestic passenger traffic and special purpose Baltic Sea traffic, with capacity of 65 passengers on day trips, 29 overnight.
