The 1956 Lin amplifier, by H. C. Lin, was the first practical transformerless transistor power amplifier. Through a series of step-by-step improvements, most importantly the addition of a balanced front end, it morphed into the ubiquitous Modified Lin amplifier, which is the dominant power amp layout to date.
