The “Klagenfurter Becken” (slowenian: “Celovška kotlina”) is a geological large valley with an area of 1.750 square-kilometers, which covers the major part of Lower Carinthia. The large valley is bordered by the Karawanken and the Steiner Alps in the south, the Lavanttal Alps in the north-east, the Gurktal Alps in the north and the Gailtal Alps in the west. Main river is the Drava, biggest city is Klagenfurt. It contains severals of the Carinthian lakes, among others the Lake Woerth and the Lake Ossiach, and is the part with the densest population of the country Carinthia.

During the winter month there is a high occurrence of temperature inversion.
