Joseph Harrison Jr. collection. This category is of works from the art collection of self-made American millionaire Joseph Harrison Jr. (1810 - 1874).

The core of Harrison's collection was American historical painting, including life portraits of George Washington and Benjamin Franklin, and major works by Benjamin West and the Peale family. Harrison also collected contemporary European and American works, and commissioned paintings and engravings. The 1870 catalogue of Harrison's collection listed more than 400 paintings and sculptures.

Dispersal of the collection began after Harrison's 1874 death, with bequests to the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Most of his collection was sold at a 3-day auction in 1910, and a final auction in March 1912.

Separately from his art collection, Harrison held George Catlin's Indian Gallery as collateral for an 1852 loan that the artist never repaid. After both men's deaths, Harrison's widow donated Catlin's more than 500 paintings and 100 Native American artifacts to the Smithsonian Institution.
