John Mercer Brook, becoming a midshipman before the foundation of the USNA in 1845, matriculated when it was available, graduating in 1847. He became a scientist of the US Naval Observatory. Having resigned in 1861 to join the Confederate Navy, he found a niche as a professor at VMI at the Confederacy's defeat, a position he held for the rest of his life.
