Jelling is famed for two runic gravestones - the Jelling stones - erected by Viking king Harald Bluetooth. The rune stones are also referred to in Denmark as "Denmark's baptism certificate" (Danish: Danmarks dåbsattest) since an inscription on the larger stone states that king Harald "won all Denmark and Norway and christned the Danes." King Gorm the Old, Harald's father and commonly counted as Denmark's first monarch, is believed to be buried under Jelling Church.
The Jelling stones, the burial mounds, and the church became UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1994.
