Category:JM's World War One Sketchbooks
JM's World War One sketchbooks are a series of 123 pen-and-ink drawings and watercolours from two volumes titled: "Sketches of the War: France/Belgium". The sketches vary from satirical cartoons to more detailed and naturalistic renditions. They are often accompanied by an ironic title and are often signed with the artist's initials, "J.M." The artist's satirical targets include the officers and high command of both combatant sides; the disjuncture between reported and actual events, and the death of civilians as a fact of modern warfare.
Book 1 contains a dedication indicating the artist bound the images himself and presented them to his daughter, Adele, at some point after 1918 Armistice. Based on the dedication, and on the dates of the sketches, it is believed that the artist
- was a member of the Royal Horse and Royal Field Artillery (the regimental crest and motto appear at the top of the page)
- was based in France and Belgium (specifically around Ypres and Menin) between 1917-1918
- he survived the war (one of the images is dated 1920)
- his initials were JM [1]
