The "imperial flag" or "imperial standard" (Reichsbanner, Reichsfahne, Reichsstandarte) of the Holy Roman Empire may refer to distinct flags depending on the period under consideration:

  • the early emperors (10th century) used a great banner showing the archangel Michael
  • the imperial war flag used in the 12th to early 14th century was gules a cross argent. The eagle banner at this time was the "royal banner" (Königsfahne), not the imperial banner.
  • In the course of the 14th century, the black eagle is re-interpreted from a royal symbol to an imperial symbol. In the late 14th to early 15th century, the eagle banner was increasingly assumed to represent the "imperial banner", but references to the cross banner as imperial banner persist until the mid 15th century.
  • beginning with Sigismund (1433), but unambiguously only from the late 15th century, the "imperial banner" is the double-headed imperial eagle in a golden field. The red pennon (Schwenkel) added to the eagle banner as imperial war flag (Reichssturmfahne) is a vestige of the old red war flag.
