English: In addition to communal altars in places of worship, small family shrines and altars may be found in some religons, especially Eastern ones such as Hinduism, Buddhism and Shinto, these may venerate ancestors, major and minor household deities. Although such practise is still prevalent in Asia, it is not a practise utterly alien in the West, for example Roman households would have an alcove to place an effigy and offerings to the household gods, and it was the practise of the Christian aristocracy to create small (and sometimes not so small) chapels within their castles and homes.
