English: "The vertical" refers to the imagined plumbline starting from the horse's forehead. A horse would be "at the vertical" when his head's profile (or the eye-cheekbone-nostril line) aligns with this imaginary "vertical". Deviances from this are referred to as "in front of the vertical" (head does not bend down enough to reach the vertical) and "behind the vertical" (head bends further inwards than the vertical). A horse might be purposefully ridden behind the vertical or, for instance, attempt to avoid the bit by bowing inwards (going "behind the bit").
