In 1978 Smithsonian Institute Press and Liberty Cap Books co-published Carriage Terminology: An Historical Dictionary written by Donald H Berkebile. ISBN 978-0874741667 Donald Berkebile was a curator at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History.
Its full scope is carriages of the Western World. In view of the many conflicts preference is given to terminology of the eastern United States and it may not fit with that of the West and South of the same country.
Berkebile advised his readers those publications of most interest are:

  • The Hub, a trade journal begun in 1869 which became Automotive Manufacturer in 1919 and closed in 1927 and
  • The Carriage Journal a publication for carriage enthusiasts begun in 1963. Large portions of each issue have been made freely available online. Complete issues are available for a nominal sum.
