Glue distemper is a paint medium in which tints and colours are dissolved in water sized with glue. The term is also used to describe both the technique of rendering works of art in such paints and to describe those works of art rendered in such paints.
Because such works are easily marked and discoloured, and cannot be washed down, distemper is best suited to temporary and interior decoration. In contemporary practice, distemper painting is employed for scenery painting in theatrical productions and other short-term applications, particularly those that call for materials cheaper than oil paints.
