In New Orleans, galleries are distinctive from balconies in that galleries (see Wikipedia:Gallery (New Orleans)#Terminology) are extended from the lot lines over the sidewalks and supported by posts at the street curbs. Galleries may or may not have a roof structure. Additionally, double gallery houses are buildings with front galleries on two stories supported by columns or posts and covered by the roof of the main building, but the galleries do not extend over sidewalks.[1]
