Friedman;s opened in September 1913 at 633 Hamilton Street. Owned by Morris Friedman and his son Benjamin, they came to Allentown from Patterson, New Jersey. The Allentown store was one of a chain of four stores, the others being in Reading, Patterson, and Albany, New York. The Friedman family also operated a clothing manufacturing plant in Patterson which produced primarily women's clothing, which was also sold wholesale to retail outlets in New York City. Allentown at the time was very competitive with women's clothing stores, and Friedman's began to shut down operations during the summer of 1916, holding a series of clearance sales. The store closed on 1 September 1916.
