Fortress fencing is a temporary but complete barrier to prevent access, typically constructed of up to 3m high by 2.4m wide sections bolted together with bracing back within the compound to be protected. Unlike site barriers which are meshed, or crowd control barriers which are low and of largely open construction, fortress fence is of solid sheet (usually aluminium, but can be polycarbonate), and is designed to be a high security option against unauthorised access. This type of fencing is often used to deter people who might wish to 'crash' events, for reasons including without paying. Fortress fencing provision includes hinged gates to allow permitted access. It is sometimes known as 'steel shield'.
