English: In the 1960s, Toronto planners envisioned a highway connecting the Gardiner Expressway in downtown Toronto to Scarborough in the east. Only a 1.3-kilometer section of the planned Scarborough Expressway was ever built, extending from the Don Valley Parkway east to Leslie Street. It became known as the Gardiner Expressway East. In 1999, the demolition of the elevated highway stub was approved by City Council, and the removal of the Gardiner Expressway segment between Bouchette Street to Leslie Street was completed in 2003. Lake Shore Boulevard, which had previously run underneath this stretch of elevated expressway, was relandscaped, and a commemorative public artwork was created out of a number of preserved supportive highway concrete pillars.
