Foranei (plural of Foraneo), are kind of larger vaporetti that ships out of the city area of Venice into the nearby laguna islands:
- the smallest and oldest are the series 80 foranei, built between 1974 and 1981
- the foranei Mestre and Treviso are larger ones, built in 1993
- in 1999/2000 were built foranei for 330 passengers : Mazzorbo, Ruggero G, S.Erasmo, Caroman, Venezia 1-5 and Vignole
- the following were class 400 foranei : Tiepolo, Giorgione, Veronese, Bellotto, Guardi, Canaletto and Vivarini
The adjective foraneo derives from the Italian "al di fuori" — outside. They serve the most remote areas of the lagoon and has functions similar to those of suburban buses.
