Finlaggan Castle on the one hand refers to any and all ruins located on Eilean Mòr, an island in the north of Loch Finlaggan, where a compact mediaeval commercial town and capital of the Kingdom of the Isles was erected. On the other hand it is recognized that a fortified castle building existed there. An excavated area has been tentatively identified as the location of the great hall of the castle. The current visible ruins are not it.
