The Ferndale Volunteer Fire Department was founded in 1897. In 2016, the department had three engine companies and a medical company with average 200 calls per year for the city and surrounding rural area. The Department gives rides on the engines on 4th of July as well as decorating the community Christmas tree - a living tree - which they climb and light every year. The Department sponsors blood drives and gives training sessions in CPR and other topics.
