The front of the institute was built in 1923 as the front of the Delicia Cinema. After the Second World War the cinema was converted into television studios for the BBC. In 1971 the BBC moved to its new Pebble Mill Studios and Aston University turned the former cinema into an arts centre. The centre became Birmingham Arts Lab in 1976 and the Triangle Arts Centre in 1983. Later the auditorium was demolished but front of the building was saved and converted into a Dillons bookshop. Waterstones took over Dillons Booksellers in 1998 and closed the shop at Gosta Green in 2003. In 2008 Aston University founded the European Bioenergy Research Institute (EBRI). The front of the former cinema became the front of EBRI's new building, which is on the site of the former auditorium.
