Attributed arms, pre-heraldic era, which began in England circa 1200-1215. For Walter Espec (d.1155), feudal baron of Helmsley in Yorkshire and feudal baron of Wark in Northumberland (Sanders, I.J. English Baronies: A Study of their Origin and Descent 1086-1327, Oxford, 1960, pp.52-3, 149-10). Piers/Peter de Ros (d.circa 1130) (originally lord of the manor of Roos in Holderness) married Adeline Espec, youngest of the 3 sisters and co-heiresses of Walter Espec (d.1155), feudal baron of Helmsley in Yorkshire and of Wark in Northumberland, founder of Kirkham Abbey and Rievaulx Abbey in Yorkshire (Cokayne, G.
