Emblems of United States Air Force air control squadrons. Air Control Squadrons have had a number of different names in the past, depending on slight variations in their mission:

  • Airborne Air Control Squadrons: Updated name for Airborne Early Warning and Control Squadrons
  • Airborne Command and Control Squadrons: Provided for command and control of mission aircraft from an aircraft, usually as a backup should the primary command center be disabled.
  • Airborne Early Warning and Control Squadrons: Performed same mission as Aircraft Control and Warning Squadrons, but from advanced location with sensors aboard aircraft.
  • Airborne Warning and Control Squadrons: Later name for Airborne Early Warning and Control Squadrons.
  • Aircraft Control and Warning Squadrons: Detected hostile aircraft and directed friendly aircraft to intercept them.
  • Post Attack Command and Control Squadrons: Early name for Airborne Command and Control Squadrons, with limited capability.
  • Radar Squadrons: Detected hostile aircraft and passed information to a control center that directed friendly interceptors.
  • Tactical Control Squadrons: Directed tactical aircraft against targets in area of responsibility. Later. also performed Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron mission.
