English: The Banco Nacional Ultramarino was the central bank for several of the portuguese colonies. In 1902, the BNU opened its representation for Portuguese Guinea in Bolama, capital of the colony until 1941. The BNU of Guinea also had an extention in Bissau, the city that became the capital of the colony in 1942. In 1974, Portuguese Guinea became an independent country under the name of Guinea-Bissau, and the BNU was nacionalized by its new gouvernment and turned into the Banco Nacional da Guiné-Bissau, the central bank of the new country.
