- Echigo Lion Dance Echigo Jishi 越後獅子 was an acrobatic lion dance (shishimai 獅子舞) put on by children street performers from Echigo Province. It was called kakubei jishi 角兵衛獅子. They performed in Edo in the winter. The dancerrs became associated with the Japanese new year celebration. Later, these performers were used as the subjects of songs and dances.
