The overlapping sections of wall constitute the entrance to the citadel. I read that the entrance way is curved (you can see the start of the curve), which would make it impossible for attackers to open the gate using a battering ram. Already in the Hellenistic period, the eastern wall of this gateway was deeply cut into the retaining and foundation wall of the temple precinct.
