English: This category covers all monastic foundations in Ireland between the 5th century and the church reform in the 12th century which began with the synod of Ráth Breasail in 1111. Shortly afterwards Bishop Malachy supported Augustinian and Cistercian foundations. A significant number of the early Celtic sites in Ireland like Devenish Island or Cong were subsequently reused for new foundations. (See Aubrey Gwynn and R. Neville Hadcock, Medieval Religious Houses Ireland, chapter Early Irish Monasteries, Longman; Geraldine Carville, The Occupation of Celtic Sites in Ireland by the Canons Regular of St Augustine and the Cistercians, ISBN 0-87907-856-1; Marie Therese Flanagan, The Transformation of the Irish Church in the Twelfth Century, ISBN 978-1-84383-828-9.)
