The D/CAS (Data Cassette) format was based on a modified Compact Cassette mechanism, easily distinguished from audio cassettes by a central notch on the top edge, and labeling for single-side operation (other side was marked like 'unusable, use opposite side'). Although the D/CAS shell is backward-compatible with audio cassette players, the D/CAS tape is not - it is practically unusable for audio applications.
