Basic arms & blazon

[edit]

In 1469 w:Charles of Valois, Duke of Berry (1446-1472) was created Duke of Aquitaine by his elder brother King Louis XI of France. The Duchy of Aquitaine had only recently been won back from the Kings of England in 1453, by whom it had been held since King Henry II (1154-1189), the first Plantagenet king, who had married the heiress Eleanor of Aquitaine. Thenceforth Charles quartered the royal arms of France (differenced by a bordure engrailed gules) with one of the three lions of Plantagenet, to signify the duchy. The Duchy of Aquitaine had been held since pre-heraldic times by the English kings, thus the duchy was symbolised heraldically solely by the arms of Plantagenet.
