Ciocia (pronounced ['tʃotʃa]) or zampitto (pronounced [ʣam'piːtto]) is a folkloric footwear of central and southern Italy. "ciociari" is a derogatory term used in Rome to ridicule the poor shepherds of the mountains. The term was adopted by the painters of the nineteenth century for their portraits of poor shepherds, in particular in Rome and in Roman Campagna. It is currently used by folkloric and tourist associations, although it is not correct on the historical-geographical level.
