Hexagonal holes in the middle of Chinese cash coins are called "turtle shell holes"; these holes were called so because of the fact that this hexagonal hole resembled the shape of a turtle shell. If the shape of these holes were octagonal or hexadecagonal then they were referred to as "flower holes".
