The Chevrolet dealership in Allentown began in 1917 when the Krause Auto Company obtained the dealership rights from the Chevrolet Motor Corporation. In 1926, Lehigh Valley Chevrolet took over the franchise when Krause went out of business. In 1933, the second Chevrolet dealership opened with the Town Motor Company. Since 1933, Allentown has had two Chevrolet new car franchises, currently being Outten Chevrolet and Sands Chevrolet; Outten being a descendant franchise of the Krause dealership, and Sands being a descendant franchise of the Town dealership.
Outten Chevrolet was established on December 7th 1979, after Jack Dankel retired at the age of 76 and his business was purchased by Willie Outten, a Philadelphia native who had owned a Chrysler-Plymouth agency in Willlingboro, New Jersey. The dealership was renamed as Outten Chevrolet. In the nearly 40 years since Outten Chevrolet has been in Allentown, it has grown and expanded. Today it is one of the largest Chevrolet dealerships in the nation.
Outten moved the dealership to the former Kelly Ford location at 1701 Tilghman (Seventeenth and Tilghman Streets) in October 1985. Outten, however did retain the former Dankel's used car lot on the southwest corner of Nineteenth and Tilghman and sells used cars there currently. He also retained the Dankel auto body shop located on Green Street, 1/2 block from the Dealership.
