English: Starting in 1901, the new Seattle Line, owned by Alexander & Baldwin, operated the Alaska steamer CHARLES NELSON of the British American Co. on off-season mail and passenger routes. On April 24, 1913 the CHARLES NELSON burned at Field's Landing, California. The hull was converted to a barge. (Source: Newell, Gordon, ed. "The H.W. McCurdy Marine History of the Pacific Northwest." Seattle: The Superior Company, 1966.) The Charles Nelson has been referred to as a "steam schooner"; mostly that term was used for lumber ships, but clearly that was not the use of this ship.
