A fortified tower or defense tower was built and maintained by a clan or sub-clan to protect their menfolk in rural areas where blood feuds existed. As blood feuds could persist between sub-clans within one village or hamlet, thus each village could hold a number of such rather slender fortified towers, one for each clan, rather then one single fortified structure per village being maintained collectively, as in medieval fortified churches. Fortified towers of clans were prevalent in particular in the Caucasus and adjoining areas, e.g. in the settlement areas of the Chechen, Ingush and Svan, where such structures are called murq'wam.
