This traditional ceremony takes place on Garland Day, May 29th, in Castleton, Derbyshire, UK. The day is also known as Oak Apple Day, in commemoration of the occasion on which King Charles II escaped from his pursuers after the Battle of Worcester by hiding in an oak tree at Boscobel.

The bell-shaped garland is constructed of garden flowers, with a special "queen" posy of florist's flowers inserted in the top. Dressed in Stuart costume, the Garland King (with the garland covering his head and shoulders) and his consort (who was formerly played by a man) ride on horseback in procession around the village. Young girls dressed in white follow them and dance at various spots along the way. After a circuit of the town, the procession reaches the churchyard gate. The "queen" posy is removed, then the Garland King rides to the foot of the church tower. The garland is hoisted off his shoulders and hauled to the top of the church tower, where it is impaled on one of the pinnacles and left to disintegrate.
