A type of zither invented ca. 1700, perhaps by John Simcock of Bath, with 14 to 24 courses of 3 or 4 strings. It was held in both hands, plucked with the thumbs, and swung back and forth while being played. A form manufactured in the 19th century was known as fairy bells."
