Battle of Jaunpur (1561). Battle in Jaunpur, on the banks of the River Gomti (also known as the Gumti or Gomati), against the Afghans of the Sūr dynasty. Victory of the Uzbek Mughal general ʿAli Quli Khan over the Afghans in Jaunpur on the banks of the Gomti.[1]
- After the downfall of Bairam Khan in 1560, the Afghans proclaimed Sher Khan, a son of Mubariz Khan (commonly known as Adali, son of Nizam Khan, the younger brother of the Sultan Sher Shah Suri) who was the commandant of Chunar, as their king, and advanced on Jaunpur with a force of 20,000 horse, 50,000 infantry and 500 elephants. Ali Quli Khan Zaman who was governor of Jaunpur, managed to defeat them with the help of local landlords [2]
- "The afghans recognized him as their leader and sometime in 1561 marched on Jaunpur of which the governor was Ali Quli Khan Khan-i-Zaman, and encamped on the bank of the river Gomti." Political history, 1542-1605 A.D, Ashirbadi Lal Srivastava, p.57
- After Adil was killed in battle, his son Sher Khan took the title of "Sher Shah" at Chunar. Sher Khan led an Afghan rebellion, marching on the Mughal-held Jaunpur with a large army. He was defeated by the Mughal general Ali Quli Khan Zaman: "Muhammad Adil himself proceeded to Bengal to seize Bengal from Bahadur, the son of Shams-ud-din but died there in 1557 and his son, Sher Khan assumed the title of Sher Shah at Chunar. After the end of the Sur dynasty the district of Jaunpur came under the Mughal rule. Jaunpur continued to be of political importance in the early history of Akbar's reign. A serious rebellion of Afghans had broken out in the eastern provinces of the empire under Sher Khan, son of Muhammad Adil, who marched from Chunar with a big army. Ali Quli Khan Khan Zaman with his brother Bahadur Khan was sent to suppress this rebellion. The two armies met near Jaunpur and the Mughals inflicted a crushing defeat on the Afghans. (...) Asaf Khan was sent to the fort of Chunar which the Afghans surrendered without any resistance. Akbar receive all the valuables and elephants from them and returned to Agra on August 29, 1561." in (1986) Uttar Pradesh District Gazetteers: Jaunpur, Lucknow, Department of District Gazetteers, p. 36
- "Khan Zaman was aware of their designs and set about strengthening the fort of Jaunpür. He sent information to the neighbouring officers and, with the exception of Sikandar Khan Uzbeg, he collected them all together, viz., Bahadur Khān, Ibrahim Khan Uzbeg, Majnün Khăn Qaqshal, Shāham Khản Jalair, Mir 'Ali Akbar, Kamal Khan Gakhar and others. As the enemy was very strong, and had nearly 20,000 cavalry and 50,000 infantry, and 500 elephants, it was not judged prudent to advance and engage them." Akbarnama, p.215
