English: Ballast Island lay in Elliott Bay at the foot of Washington and Main Streets off the shore of Seattle, Washington from roughly the 1860s into the mid-1890s. Sailing ships dumped their ballast of boulders and other materials there, creating an artificial island. At times, the island was occupied by Native Americans displaced by the growing city, and also by some of the poorer settlers. It was ultimately cleared away for port expansion.
