Agricultural watchtowers (Hebrew: שומרה, "Shomera"), were common in ancient Israel. They were used by farmers in order to watch over farmland and more specifically over vineyards, and to host families and harvested grapes during the harvest season. Many examples survived and can be found in the mountains of Judea and Samaria, near other remains of ancient agriculture such as terraces and rock-cut winepresses.
