Aakash (Hindi; आकाश meaning "sky") is an Android-based tablet computer designed and developed by DataWind primarily as a platform for audio-visual media including books, periodicals, movies, music, games, and web content. It is manufactured in India as a low cost but full functioning device in order to attempt to bridge the digital divide. The device was formally launched on October 5, 2011, and will be assembled at DataWind's new production centre in Hyderabad. Aakash has been developed as part of the governmental National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology that aims to link 25,000 colleges and 400 universities on the Indian subcontinent in an e-learning program.
