SHOULDER SLEEVE INSIGNIA

[edit]- On a shield 3-1/2 inches in height, blazoned: Per pale Gules and Argent an arrow and sword in saltire Sable the head of the arrow of the first, all within a bordure of the third.
- COMBAT SERVICE IDENTIFICATION BADGE: A silver color metal and enamel device 2 inches (5.08 cm) in diameter consisting of a design similar to the shoulder sleeve insignia.
Symbolism
[edit]- Red and white represent the courageous sacrifices the brigade has made in its history of service to the state of Alabama and the United States Army.
- The arrow stands for the Black Warrior River where the unit was originally organized in early 1861.
- The scarlet arrowhead recalls the 31 Infantry Division’s assault landing on New Guinea during WWII.
- The sword emphasizes the readiness to respond with force, whether by offensive or defensive protection operations.
- The black border conveys protection for the citizens of Alabama and the greater nation from all hazards.

[edit]- The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally approved for the 31st Division on 1919-03-07.
- It was redesignated for the 31st Infantry Division on 1942-02-27.
- It was redesignated for the 31st Armored Brigade on 1974-02-25.
- The insignia was redesignated effective 2002-09-30, with description updated and a symbolism added, for the 31st Chemical Brigade.
- The insignia was modified to amend the design and symbolism 21 December 2023.
DISTINCTIVE UNIT INSIGNIA

[edit]- A gold metal and epoxied disc shaped device 1-3/16 inches in height blazoned as follows: Argent, between a fleur-de-lis in chief and a Philippine sun in base Or, upon a fess wavy of the last an arrow pointing to dexter shaft Sable and head Gules, overall a saltire of the last, all within a bordure of the third. Above the disc a semi-circular gold scroll inscribed “DRAGON” in black and beneath the disc a scroll of the like inscribed “BRIGADE” in black.
Symbolism
[edit]- The fleur-de-lis symbolizes the unit’s participation in World War I.
- The sun represents the organization’s Philippine Presidential Unit Citation for service in the southern Philippines, World War II; the scarlet arrowhead alluding to the unit’s assault landing at New Guinea.
- The black arrow shaft and the wavy fess represent the location on the Black Warrior River where the unit was originally organized in early 1861.
- The scarlet saltire on a white field represents strength and support.
- The disc shape symbolizes speed and the black border indicates mobility.
