Rhine in the Netherlands
[edit]The Rhine enters the Netherlands at Spijk. There it immediately changes its name, to Boven-Rijn (Upper Rhine). At Millingen aan de Rijn it splits into a northern branche and a southern branch, the Waal. The northern branche flows via Pannerdensch Canal to Arnhem; at Arnhem it splits again, now into a northern branch, the IJssel, and a western one, the Nederrijn.

Nederrijn and Lek
[edit]The Nederrijn runs from Angeren (southeast of Arnhem) to Wijk bij Duurstede, where it continues as Lek to the west, and as Kromme Rijn to the north.
The Lek flows between Wijk bij Duurstede and Kinderdijk, where it becomes "New Maas" together with the Noord (North).

Kromme Rijn, Utrechtse Vecht, Leidse Rijn, Oude Rijn
[edit]The Kromme Rijn is a northern branch of the Nederrijn and flows between Wijk bij Duurstede and the city of Utrecht. From there it continues north as Vecht, and west as Leidse Rijn (Rhine of Leiden) and then Oude Rijn (Old Rhine).
The Utrechtse Vecht runs from the Weerdsluis in the city of Utrecht and flows into the IJmeer about 40 kilometers further near Muiden.
The Leidse Rijn runs from the city of Utrecht to Harmelen.
The Oude Rijn runs from Harmelen via Leiden to Katwijk.
