English: This category serves as a general repository for images depicting the theme of liminal space. Liminal space is an aesthetic consideration, and therefore somewhat subjective, but there are several qualities that can be used as criteria for a match between a given candidate image and this category. Liminality is a "quality of ambiguity, disorientation, or state of transition"; while these may seem disparate, the commonalities they possess arise when considered in the light of developments proceeding from the architectural discipline, specifically the space/place interplay. Spaces are volumetric; places are psychological or social in nature. Many spaces are dedicated and artificed as places for some particular purpose, usually as an end goal. Liminal spaces may be similarly constructed, but are subsidiary to another concern; they may lead to or from a more defined place, or juxtapose between two uses or periods of time. This can lead to an eerie sense of placelessness, which is often considered a defining feature of liminality.
