File talk:WHITE SISTERS DETAIL 1979,jpg.jpg
The White Sisters was begun the same time as Muktananda in 1976, and both started with the same format with two blocks of rectangular overall-red streaked with umber over a middle ground of light blue-green, placed one on top of the other like the trigrams of the I Ching, resting on a bed of yellow that boarders the two floating rectangles. The two sisters' portraits were then scratched into the top trigram, and I left it that way for a while; it was quiet striking! Then over several years I change it twice again to eventually scrape almost the entire red surface away except for some heavily stylized contours, and by going even more down to the threads than in Muktananda, the feeling for these two women is a very real presence of unreality.
Its original state can be found in The Empire Striking Back, Judd Tully - 'Flash Art', Chapter 13, "Portraits & Passages", and its second state can be compared to the final state in Robert Kushner - Syda Yoga and Baba Muktananda, Chapter 15, "Portraits & Passages", www.richard-rappaport.net.
In its final state, The White Sisters sits on an ad page in Art in America, January 1982.
